Transmission Lines and Substations

Learn how to locate Transmission Lines and Substations in Transect.

Transect makes locating transmission lines and substations easy, allowing developers to quickly identify potential grid connection points and assess the feasibility of integrating renewable energy projects into the existing power grid.

In this article, we’ll review how to:

Viewing Transmission Lines and Substations in the Map

The following layers are used to visualize Transmission Lines and Substations in the Map:

  • Electric Substations (HIFLD): This data is sourced from the Homeland Infrastructure Foundation Level Database (HIFLD) and represents electric power substations equal to or greater than 69kV. Substations with less voltage are also included if the information is publicly available.
  • Electric Power Transmission Lines (HIFLD): This data is also sourced from the Homeland Infrastructure Foundation Level Database. This layer includes lines operating at voltages varying from 69 kV to 765 KV. Underground transmission lines are also included where available.

These layers can be filtered to show lines or substations with certain capacities. For Electric Power Transmission Lines (HIFLD):

  • Click the dropdown next to the layer, then select Filter.
  • Select an attribute and operation from the dropdowns, then input a value.
  • When finished, select the + to apply your changes.

Use the Parcel Filter to locate properties that are within a certain proximity to a Transmission Line or Substation.

Viewing Transmission Lines and Substations in a Transect Report

At the top of the Executive Summary is the Report Map, where you can apply layers to visualize certain aspects of your Area of Interest.

To view Transmission Lines or Substations, select the caret icon next to Catalog Items and select the applicable layer(s). This Map can be saved as a Custom Map to include in your PDF export.

Below the Report map,  you’ll see the location of the nearest Transmission Line and Substation.

To view detailed information, navigate to Supporting Docs & Resources > Catalog. This data can be filtered by selecting Filters and checking the box for Electrical Infrastructure. You can also export this by right-clicking and selecting Export > CSV or Excel.
