Distribution Lines
Learn how to find suitable land near distribution lines.
Transect makes it easy for distribution-level developers to identify where distribution lines exist and, where available from the utility, to see additional details like hosting capacity, line voltage, and phase configuration (single- or three-phase).
In this article, you will learn how to:
- View Distribution Lines in the Map
- Filter parcels by proximity to Distribution Lines
- Request new Distribution Line data

Viewing Distribution Lines in the Map

- Navigate to the Map from the top navigation bar.
- Within the Map Layers widget, select the Distribution Lines layer group.
- Check the box next to the name of each utility to view one or more layers on the Map.
- Right-click on lines to view available data, like hosting capacity or line voltage.
Tips for navigating the Map:
- Zoom to Location: Click the Zoom To
icon next to a layer to jump directly to the data.
- Filter Your View: Click Filter
to view lines based on specific Line Voltage or Hosting Capacity criteria, where available. - Review the Legend: The line colors represent available hosting capacity; if all lines are the same color, hosting capacity is not available for that utility.
Filtering by Proximity to Distribution Lines
You can use the Parcel Filter to find land within a specific distance of a utility's distribution lines.
- Navigate to the Map from the top of any page.
- In the "Parcel Filters" toolbar, select Boundary
and then Map Layers
. - Within the "Choose a Layer' dropdown, select a utility and specify the search area around the layer (in miles).
- Optionally, you can select
to refine your search by:
- Hosting Capacity (MW)
- Line Voltage (kV)
- When finished, select Apply Filters.
You can further refine your search results by specifying additional filters, such as a minimum parcel size.
