Linear Development Reporting

Learn about the new Linear Development reporting in Transect.

The new Linear Development reporting tool makes it easy to create projects by drawing a single continuous line.  You can either draw your line in a KML file and upload it, or simply draw a line directly within the app.

Table of Contents:

Getting Started

Users can create a project using Linear Development by uploading a KML or selecting the Line tool. When using the line tool, click for each vector of your line and double-click when finished to save it.

If you're uploading a KML, ensure the line is already drawn within the attachment. Then, select Upload KML and locate your saved KML file. Once uploaded, the drawn line will populate directly in Transect where you can then order a report.

Please note that the project must be a single line to trigger the linear features.  The linear features will not populate if there is a parcel with lines drawn, if there are double lines, or if there are any other drawn features that impact the single line.

Identifying Risk in a Linear Project

Transect offers a variety of map layers that help you quickly identify areas of concern, allowing you to plan and mitigate risks for a successful project. The Protected Areas Risk Map (CONUS), Waters Risk Map (CONUS), Species Risk Map (CONUS), and Environmental Compliance Risk Map (CONUS) all highlight hotspots along your linear project.  Whether the route has wetlands, federally managed areas, protected species, or anything in between, you can quickly find them and plan accordingly. You can easily add these layers by accessing the Map Layer Manager.

Understanding Linear Projects in the Executive Summary

The Executive Summary provides information about the area of interest (AOI) and highlights associated risks. When creating Linear projects, the Executive Summary will display linear units to describe the AOI and total length of waterway crossings.

Reviewing a Site's Data

After running a report, users can navigate to the Data pages within the Executive Summary for more information on the milestones' start and end markers. The milestone markers enable users to complete preliminary cost estimates based on the area of interest (AOI) length that goes through waterways, forests, or other impacted areas.

Water and Protected Areas

The Waters data section highlights the area within the location (acres) and the length within the location (feet). To access this information:

  • Under 'Key Details' on the left side of the page, select Water or Protected Areas.
  • Within the dropdown menu, click Data.

Exporting Route Info

Once you've reviewed your report, you can easily export the route info and corresponding start/end milestone markers for each intersecting feature. The export makes it simple to calculate the total length (feet) for each intersecting feature (wetland, forest, etc.) and estimate costs based on your per-foot/mile rates.

  • Click Export in the upper right-hand corner and select Route Info from the dropdown menu.
  • Choose Generate Route Info and determine the export format (single Excel file or separate CSVs).
